The 2s stunning win, the 1s struggle at home to Ashdown Forest and Pete D the 1st in profile

27th July 2011

The front page goes to a stunning away victory by Streat 2nds at much improved Palmers on Saturday afternoon. In a tight 5th division the win was obligatory for Davison and his men to keep the promotion dream alive.  Batting first Streat made 210 for 7 declared on 43 overs.  Nigel Butler scored 65,  skipper made a welcome half century and Alex K kept up his wonderful season with a solid 42 runs.   The chase was never on as wickets tumbled and Palmers were put out of their misery in the last over.  The wickets were shared around but the 'Hawk' pitched in with 3.

From Peter's post match text I get the impression that it was an impressive team performance and he was very happy indeed.  The 'Play School' match report is a must see triumph where 2 things shone through.

1)  The team spirit
2)  Skips dodgy haircut !!

The win keeps Streat in the hunt but there is no doubt that another victory will be required at Forest Row.   GOOD LUCK BOYS

Ashdown Forest were in solid form at the Manor in Stoner League match of the day.  Congratulations to in- form Jules Hunt in making his debut ton for the club with skipper Nigel backing him with a fine 50.  It seemed to go down hill after an amazing start with wickets falling in quick succession.  The 1st team ended on 228 all out which seemed a little below par.   Young Pat W took consecutive whacks to the ankle and was forced out of the rest of the match.  Good luck to him in his recovery.

An early breakthrough proved folly as Leif Powis (113no) and Scott Marshall (93no) produced a captivating spell of top order batting.  None of our bowlers did anything wrong but Forest were just perfect with the bat and went on to chase the total with relative ease.  Two losses against our close rivals will be very hard to reconcile but with Down losing the league is still very much in our hands.

The team will definitely need to dust themselves down and go for all out victory at home against Colemans Hatch on Saturday.

On Sunday 24th Stan and his Sunday troops took sweet revenge on Albourne at Berrylands in a low scoring affair.  It seems as though Albourne repeated recent batting collapses and were unable to chase 90 odd.  I can tell you they were not happy with themselves !!

Peter Davies in the Spotlite.

Pete has always been very welcoming to me here at Streat and is was lovely to catch up with him and his wife Jan on Saturday afternoon.
He started playing in 2001 at Berrylands on a Saturday afternoon.  He revealed ' even though the match was abandoned due to rain I took two spiraling catches at cow corner and I was hooked !!'   He turned up on spec at the Manor on the Sunday, got a game and Jan soon became a cricket widow.
After a season he quickly became the 1st team keeper and started taking stumping's in his stride.  He said ' THE GLOVES JUST SEEMED TO FIT' . During those early years he was playing 3 times a week so was getting a lot of practice. Pete has amassed a staggering 93 stumping's in his Streat career ( probably right up there in the County at this level) Not content, he is looking for the TON before hanging up the gloves !

The Fantasy League was high on Pete's radar winning it three years on quick succession. He said ' you had to play a lot of matches to beat Colin Mansfield !!

Everyone in the club knows that Peter always wants to get on with it when bat in hand.  His top scored was 102 at Bolney in 2005.  Most of us have seen the power of his hitting once in the 'zone', he must be a bowlers nightmare.  The 'Downs End' sight screen has certainly taken the brunt of two brutal flat sixes on consecutive weekends (2009).  Both holes were duly signed by the batsman.

Not known for his bowling he did take 4 wickets once.  He doesn't hold a grudge BUT Stan did drop a catch on the last ball of the match preventing a 5 for !!

Around 4 weeks ago a dark cloud appeared when bad health came a knocking.  During the last week of June Pete became aware of chest pains and even pulled out of the Lindfield away game.  On 2nd July he was in the car park at Asda Hollingbury and suffered the first of 2 heart attacks. Feeling rough all weekend he suffered another one on Monday morning and it was at this point he was rushed to hospital and was fitted with a 'stent' to help the blood flow. He is now back with us but is on life long medication and has been ordered to REDUCE CRICKET TEAS !!

He is determined to get himself fit for several late season friendly's and is very keen to be ever present during the 2012 campaign.

He said  ' I have really enjoyed playing for Streat over the past 10 years,  you always get a chance !!

Peter is an intrinsic and important part of the club producing a lot of explosive performances. I am sure that everyone will want to wish you best wishes with your recovery and hope it won't be long before you are bagging your 100th stumping !!!

Chaps

A massive thanks to Colin Bowman who did a fantastic job of organising our tour this week. The weather was very British but we managed to get some decent cricket in. Everyone had fun and many were overserved at the bar.

Here's to many more future tours.

Cheers Colin - top job!

2011 - Message from our Chairman

11th January 2011

Hi Everyone & a Happy New Year to each and every one of you.

2010 was an excellent year in many ways too with the 1st's securing Runners Up in Div 1, we had our own inter Club T20 match, the Summer Soiree proved a big success, Stan took his trillionth wicket and the ground looked an absolute picture all season.

So what for 2011 now the Aussies have finally been put back in their box?  The anticipation is beginning to build and one wonders what twists and turns 2011 will bring SWCC?

Here's a few things to bring you up to speed on, or maybe just refresh your memories:

  • Nets - begin at the County Ground from 8pm Friday 21st January.  Please come along and do keep vigilant for new players

  • We've got a brand new League set up to take on board and I'm sure our League Rep Dave Porter will keep us posted of any important updates

  • T20 - Based on last years successful evening and the following enthusiasm expressed we want to set up another inter Club evening in May or June

  • After a break of some ... well it's got to be getting on for 25 years since Warwick University, the Streat Tour Bus hits the road again thanks to the efforts & organisational skills of Colin Bowman.  More on that soon from Colin

  • Streat Autumn Golf Day - Mickey Stratford is arranging a golf day and would like to gauge interest nice and early.  "PLEASE! ask those members who play golf, to at least commit an interest for the autumn 2011 competition.............ANY STANDARD, ANY ABILITY, ANY SEX."   So if you're up for it please could you send Mickey an email asap to  stratford.m@orange.fr

  • Finally, we're looking at ways to improve the weekly availability system as it causes no end of trouble throughout the season.  We'll let you know more nearer the time but this is one area you can all help us with.  The key hear is early notification of Non Availability.  Yes Non Availability.  We've tried the availability route forever and a day and it's time for a change.  Essentially the new system means all players are considered available for every match unless they advise otherwise.  We are looking at a system that allows you to provide your non availability well in advance and once you've all got the mindset right it could make for a much easier life.  I'm hopeful it will work and it should mean we know really early about shortages.  Please can I ask that you all take individual responsibility to maker this work properly.  Thank you.  More about that nearer the start of the season.

Well that's it for now, all that it remains for me to do is to congratulate England for bringing home the Ashes, and to offer our warmest wishes to at least two of our Members as I believe Wedding Bell's are being lined up.  "Surely not during the season I hear you cry!?!"  I won't steal their thunder so no names or pack drill but congratulations all the same.

Wishing you all the very best year ever!
